CALLAN

He awoke with Niomi on his chest. She was still sound asleep. He rubbed her back as she began to rise. He did not know what to make of last night. It was amazing…Niomi was amazing.

This was everything he had hoped for. Not only did he get Niomi to create Vokk’s, but he had also managed to seduce her.

Yet he felt unsettled. Was it because he never thought it would happen? Or simply because he had something to lose now? Did she think the same, or did it mean nothing to her? Could she be the future queen of the Unseelie people? How would he ever be able to convince her to stay?

Niomi began lifting her head off his chest; she gazed down at him through her smudged makeup. She rubbed her face, “Good morning,” she smiled.

“How are you feeling?” He asked her. About me? He left out.

He thought she was piecing together the previous night. Her face fell. There was something in her eyes. Guilt. Callan felt like he was going to be sick. Did she regret being with him?

“I’m okay. I’m a little sleepy.” She sat up, “You?”

Panic flooded through him. He had to leave. Callan climbed out of bed. “About the same.” He walked into the closet and got dressed as fast as he could.

She gave him an odd expression, “In a hurry this morning?”

“Lot’s to do. Why don’t you rest today and go see your children?”

“Okay…” She answered. What had happened?

Callan rushed to get ready for the day. He needed to get out of here, away from her.

He didn’t look back at her as he flew out the door, “I’ll see you tomorrow for breakfast.”

When he escaped into the long hallway, he took a deep breath.

Her eyes told him everything he needed to know.

At first, he wanted her as his wife because she was a necessary resource. She would be powerful, and she would be his people’s savior, their lifeline. She didn’t want him as he wanted her.

But now he had grown to care for her. He had seen the darkest part of her soul and still found beauty in it. He didn’t realize how much comfort he would find having her head on his chest. But now he did, and she did not want him.

Callan tried to push thoughts of Niomi away as he descended the dark staircase. He had bigger things to worry about. The Seelie court had attempted to sneak into the party last night.
